intuition, creativity and discipline

When I went to Pixar, I became aware of a great divide. Tech companies don’t understand creativity. They don’t appreciate intuitive thinking, like the ability of an A&R guy at a music label to listen to a hundred artists and have a feel for which five might be successful. And they think that creative people just sit around on couches all day and are undisciplined, because they’ve not seen how driven and disciplined the creative folks at places like Pixar are. On the other hand, music companies are completely clueless about technology. They think they can just go out and hire a few tech folks. But that would be like Apple trying to hire people to produce music. We’d get second-rate A&R people, just like the music companies ended up with second-rate tech people. I’m one of the few people who understands how producing technology requires intuition and creativity, and how producing something artistic takes real discipline.

Grok and See

To design something really well you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to thoroughly understand something –chew it up, not just quickly swallow it. Most people don’t take the time to do that. Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask a creative person how they did something, they may feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after awhile. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or have thought more about their experiences than other people have. Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. They don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions, without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better designs we will have.

去設計某些你一定要的真正好的東西。你必須要真正的心領神會所有一切關於它的事物。這需要一種對某些事物要完全領悟的熱情承諾。咀嚼它，而不是匆忙的吞下它。大部分人，不花時間去做這件事。創意只是關於連結事物。當你問那些創意十足的人如何做到時，他們可能會覺得心虛，因為他們其實沒有真正去做它，他們只是看到了某些東西。對他們而言，一段時間後、某些事物似乎變的顯而易見。這是因為他們有能力連結他們已有的經驗並且整合新的事物。而且他們有能力達到的原因是：他們擁有比別人多的體會，同時比別人對於其自身感受有著更多的思考。不幸的是，這是非常少見的優點特質。在我們的行業裡，很多人沒有相當多樣多元的感受與體會。由於對困難缺乏寬廣的看法，他們沒有足夠的點去連結，因而停留在非常狹隘的解決方式上。因此，越廣泛瞭解人類的感受與體驗，越有可能使我們會獲得更好的設計內容。
